Re-branding: Scope

By 1990 it had become a term of abuse, so a name change was inevitable.

The Spastics Society changed its name in 1994 to Scope. The term 'spastic' was, at the time the Spastics Society was founded, one that was applied to cerebral palsy sufferers. By 1990 it had become a term of abuse, so a name change was inevitable. On the first anniversary of the name change, Scope had attracted nearly 40,000 new donors. It was also in talks with 25 potential corporate donors and sponsors, many of whom steered clear of the charity when it was called the Spastics Society. If they can do it, so can you!
