The Media Trust debate:
Are there too many charities?
On Wednesday 08 November, the Media Trust, supported by The
Guardian newspaper and Ketchum, the major PR company, is hosting
a debate to discuss whether there are too many charities doing
similar work and competing unnecessarily with each other.
It will be a lively and stimulating discussion - have we
reached saturation and if so, what can the voluntary sector
can do about it?
The debate will be held at the Curzon Soho Cinema, London,
from 11.00am to 1.00pm.
It will be chaired by broadcaster Alastair Stewart, and will
feature a debate panel and guest speakers including:
- John Stoker, Chief Charity Commissioner.
- Polly Toynbee, the writer and commentator.
- James Maxwell, Chief Executive of Ketchum Europe.
- Ed Mayo, director of the leading voluntary sector think-tank,
the New Economics Foundation.
- Chris Hanvey, Director of the Ellerman Foundation, one
of the UK's top 40 grant-making trusts.
The audience will include chief executives, communications
heads of major charities, directors of some of the main grant-making
trusts and other representatives of key voluntary sector organisations.

Notes for editors
The Media Trust helps charities communicate. We do this
by encouraging media professionals to volunteer their time
and skills. We work across a range of communications disciplines
from PR and design to video. We have our own dedicated television
channel.
Ketchum is one of the UK's leading advisers in business community
involvement, corporate social and environmental responsibility
issues, and private-voluntary sector partnerships.
The Guardian is committed to the public sector and sponsors
various events throughout the year. Central to this commitment
is 'Society', its dedicated public sector Wednesday supplement.
