Audio clips

What are the audio clips for?

The audio can be used as an alternative option to the video in some of the 'Overview' sections. This is especially useful if you cannot view the video, for example if your internet connection is not fast enough to display the video effectively or you are blind or partially sighted. The audio player is included on a page together with the transcript so you can follow what has been said. One advantage over the video is that the audio download time is less than its corresponding video clip. It is not essential to play the audio clips, but it may help to clarify points made in the subject text.

How do I play the audio?

In the audio player on the page there is a 'Play' button and a 'Stop' button, which can be used to control the clip. Selecting the 'Play' button will begin the download of the clip. This should take a few seconds depending on the speed of your internet connection. The player should show the word 'Buffering' with a percentage figure to indicate that it is downloading and preparing to play.

Do I need special software to hear to the audio clips?

The audio clips have been encoded to play using Microsoft Windows Media Player. This is software that is included with the Window's operating systems. Macintosh users will probably have to install version 7.1+ of Windows Media Player, though it depends on the version of Mac OS you are using. Windows Media Player can be downloaded for free at Microsoft's web site. Additionally, if you want to view the clips in Netscape web browser version 6+, you will need to install version 7+ of Windows Media Player.

I pressed the 'Play' button and nothing happened

The audio clips are relatively small and should not take longer than a minute to download and playback. Using a relatively slow modem connection this may take longer. If nothing appears to be happening after some time or you get a 'timed-out' message, try pressing the refresh button and reloading the page. Alternatively, you can wait for the player to finish 'opening' before pressing 'Play'. If all this fails you could try selecting the 'Open in stand alone player' option.

I'm having problems trying to play the audio. What can I do to fix this?

You may be trying to play audio using an incompatible web browser or Windows Media Player version:

  • Users of Netscape web browser version 6 or greater will need to have Windows Media Player version 7 or greater installed in order to view the video in the actual web pages.
  • Users of Macintosh computers need to have version 7.1+ of Windows Media Player installed.

The following options are available if you are experiencing problems with audio playback:

  • Select the option for viewing in a 'stand-alone' player.
  • Download and install Version 7 or greater of Windows Media Player.
  • View the transcript.
  • Change browser. For example view the pages in the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser if you were previously using Netscape.
